Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
