Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
