RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
